Ahead of the general elections in 2027, the leadership of the Labour Party has insisted that Abia Governor Alex Otti has no intention of switching to the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC.

This was said by Obiora Ifoh, the party’s national publicity secretary, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

Rumour has it that at least five first-term opposition governors are planning to switch to the APC in advance of the general elections in 2027.

According to media sources, the governors are Umoh Eno, Akwa Ibom; Siminalayi Fubara, Rivers; Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta; and Alex Otti, Enugu, Peter Mba, Enugu.

Otti is a member of the Labour Party, whereas Mbah, Fubara, Eno, and Oborevwori are governors of the PDP. The two parties are currently embroiled in a post-2023 election battle.

However, Ifoh stated in the interview that the alleged Otti plan to dump LP for APC was more untrue.

“It is a mere rumour and I hope it remains so. For us in the Labour Party, we are in touch with our governor, Dr Alex Otti, and he has assured us that he is not going anywhere, ahead of 2027.

“We believe that he will stay with us, irrespective of some of the issues which we are working hard to resolve,” he said.

Otti was not considering joining the ruling APC, according to the national publicity secretary, who also stated that switching parties is nothing new in any democratic environment.

“The courts have come up several times to make interpretation as regards Section 84 of the 1999 Constitution and many people who had defected at one time or the other had been challenged in court.

“So, if five governors are planning to defect, it won’t be a new thing, as it had happened in the past,” he said.

Ifoh explained the reported defection by saying that certain opposition governors had been struggling to maintain control over their states.

He maintained that there was neither truth or substance to the conjecture about the only governor of the Labour Party.

“We are good in Labour Party and our governor is with us, and we are hoping that by 2027, we will have more governors in our fold,” he said.
