Labour sends strong warning to Tinubu over sending new minimum wage to NASS

President Bola Tinubu has been instructed by Organised Labour not to submit any new minimum wage figures to the National Assembly without first consulting them.

Additionally, they made it plain that, regardless of how long it takes for the new minimum wage to become law, employees would seek payment of unpaid wages.

Speaking on the fringes of the ongoing International Labour Conference at the Palais du Nation in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday were Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Before deciding on a final amount, Ajaero stated he anticipates Tinubu will call a meeting of the tripartite bodies to debate the ability to pay.

He stated, “We do not expect the President to present a final figure to the National Assembly without consulting with organized Labour, employers, and state governors.

“Everyone will still come together to discuss before transmission to the National Assembly.”

Organized Labour pushed for a new minimum wage of N250,000 this week once more, but the federal government is only prepared to pay N60,000.

At the moment, N30,000 is the minimum pay.
