The Lagos State University (LASU) has directed students residing in its hostels to vacate the premises due to a strike by its staff unions. According to Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations at LASU, students are expected to vacate the hostels by August 4.
The strike, which began on July 31, involves four staff unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT). The unions’ demands are directed at the Lagos State government.
The university management has been facilitating dialogue and pursuing peaceful resolutions between the unions and the state government. A meeting was held on August 1, chaired by Olabode Agoro, the Lagos State Head of Service, where it was agreed that further consultations would be held, with all parties reconvening on August 7.
As a result of the strike, the university has put on hold the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, initially scheduled to commence on August 4. All other activities in the university have also been suspended until further notice.
The LASU Senate has advised members of the university community, particularly students, to remain calm and law-abiding. “The senate, after due deliberations, resolved that the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, initially scheduled to commence on August 4, be put on hold. All other activities in the university will be suspended until further notice,” the statement read.
