The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Lagos State University (LASU), in partnership with Alumni (Diaspora and Homeland), successfully organised the Freshers’ Orientation and Scholarship Award Ceremony 2025. The event took place on Tuesday, 28th January 2025, at the S.L. EDU Hall, Faculty of Science, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.
The programme aimed to welcome new students into the mathematics department while celebrating academic excellence through scholarship awards. The event was graced by esteemed guests, current students, and distinguished alumni, both from the diaspora and homeland, who came together to share their experiences and insights with the freshmen.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, was ably represented by the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Olufemi Adigun-Lawal. The VC warmly welcomed the students and guests present, expressing her special love for the mathematics department.
In her address, Prof. Olatunji-Bello encouraged the students to remain focused and resilient, saying, “I want to encourage you to remain focused and resilient. You are in the best hands, and I assure you that mathematics provides solutions to many problems. As mathematicians, you are problem solvers, and I urge you to embrace your roles.”
She commended the mathematics department for its various innovative contributions, citing exceptional exploits by lecturers such as Prof. Moses Akanbi, Dr. Ashiribo Wusu, Dr. Aminat Ige, and others. “I must commend the mathematics department for its innovative contributions. Your lecturers are exceptional, and I am confident that you will excel under their guidance,” she said.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello also praised the head of the department and the alumni for sustaining this initiative, calling it worthy of emulation by other departments. “I must commend the Head of Department and the Alumni for sustaining this initiative. It is worthy of emulation by other departments, and I encourage you to continue this good work,” she said.
The keynote address was delivered by the guest speaker and Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Moses Akanbi, who emphasised the importance of determination for success in the first year and beyond. “Mathematics has solutions to real-life problems, and God is the foremost mathematician,” he said.
Prof. Akanbi encouraged the students to be determined and focused, saying, “Determination is key to success. You must be determined to succeed, and you must be focused on your goals. With hard work and determination, you will excel in mathematics and beyond.
