Douglas Ogbankwa, a former Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Benin Branch, has criticized the Senate’s suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing it as an example of “double standards.”
Ogbankwa made the remark on Wednesday during an appearance on The Morning Brief, a current affairs programme aired on Channels Television.
He argued that the Senate acted prematurely by suspending the senator while her case was still pending in court.
“One thing that is important is to follow the sequence of events. Both parties have been in arbitration to the law one way or the other. While she was still in court, the Senate proceeded to pronounce the suspension on her. As far as I’m concerned, that is double standards,” he said.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended for six months on March 6, 2025, following a contentious exchange during a Senate session.
She was accused of violating legislative rules, but has since taken legal action, claiming the suspension infringed on her rights and disenfranchised her constituents.
While acknowledging that the senator’s behavior during the proceedings may not have been appropriate, Ogbankwa insisted that the Senate lacked the constitutional power to remove an elected representative from office through suspension.
