Zuhier R. Akar, a 67-year-old Lebanese man, was found guilty of sexually abusing two young girls in Kano and was given a 14-year prison sentence.

On Wednesday, a Federal High Court in Kano, chaired by Justice S. M. Shuaibu, sentenced Akar.

Akar was charged with two charges of trafficking and sexual exploitation by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Kano Command.

After finding Akar guilty, Justice S. M. Shu’aibu sentenced him to 14 years in prison without the possibility of a fine and mandated that he pay N2 million for the victims’ medical care.

The prosecution, under the direction of Abdullahi Babale, the Kano Zonal Commander, claims that on September 5, 2024, the Department of State Security Service (DSS) submitted the case to NAPTIP.

The girls, ages 14 and 15, were allegedly obtained by Akar, who then used them as sexual objects in his house. Later, a video of the event was shared on social media.

To bolster their case, the prosecution produced four evidence, which included Akar’s confessional statement and the testimonies of the victims.

In response to the accusations, Akar entered a guilty plea, breaking the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act of 2015.

For Akar, defense attorney R A Kasali begged for leniency.
