The federal government has made significant strides in promoting renewable energy in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. Under the “Energising Education Project,” 24 federal tertiary institutions now harness solar energy to power their operations. This initiative, spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, aims to provide uninterrupted electricity to these institutions and their teaching hospitals.

Minister of Education Tunji Alausa highlighted the project’s impact, stating, “This project brings continuous, 24-hour electricity to our institutions, enabling round-the-clock academic activity, powering laboratories and libraries, and improving living and learning conditions for both students and faculty.” The initiative has already shown promising results, with over 600,000 students and 50,000 academic staff benefiting from the project.

The project’s success can be attributed to the Renewable Infrastructure Fund, which drives infrastructure growth across sectors. Alausa emphasised the importance of sustainability, challenging university administrators to develop innovative strategies to ensure the project’s long-term viability. The goal is to equip all tertiary institutions with renewable energy sources by 2027.

The “Energising Education Project” is a key component of Nigeria’s broader effort to leverage renewable energy for educational advancement and sustainable development. By transitioning to solar energy, these institutions can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to a more environmentally friendly future.

As part of the project’s expansion, eight additional universities have been selected to join the fourth phase, bringing the total number of beneficiary institutions to 24. This development underscores the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy and reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

With the project’s successful implementation, Nigeria’s tertiary institutions can look forward to a more sustainable and energy-efficient future, empowering students and faculty to thrive in a conducive learning environment.
