The management of Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has declared a two-day lecture-free period to mourn the loss of five students who were killed in a fatal auto crash on Monday.

According to a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar, Human Resources, the university community is in deep sorrow and grief following the loss of the students. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the tragic loss of five of our promising students, who were taken away from us too soon in a fatal trailer accident,” the statement read.

The management described the accident as “one too many” and stated that it has left the university community in shock. “This wanton loss of lives is one accident too many. The accident left our university community in deep sorrow and grief,” the statement added.

In honour of the departed students, the university management has declared a lecture-free period effective from 12 noon on Tuesday, February 18, and all day Wednesday, February 19. “All other university activities will be low-key, while the institution’s flags will fly at half-mast as a symbol of mourning,” the statement said.

The management prayed for the souls of the departed students, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, and the entire university community during this difficult time. May God grant them merciful judgement and rest their souls in eternal peace.”

The accident occurred when a truck carrying timber logs lost its brakes and crashed into a shuttle bus carrying FUL students. Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, the FRSC Kogi Sector Commander, attributed the accident to brake failure. “The accident took place around 3:40 p.m. when the truck, carrying timber logs, lost its brakes, veered into the opposite lane, and crashed into a shuttle bus carrying FUL students,” he said.

Oyedeji confirmed that seven people lost their lives in the accident, including the driver of the shuttle bus and one other passenger.
