Two major French fuel retailers, E.Leclerc and ‘U’ service stations, are relaunching a cost-price fuel scheme this weekend. Over 700 E.Leclerc stations and 807 ‘U’ service stations will sell fuel at cost price, meaning the price they purchase it from suppliers, on August 1 and 2.
According to Michel-Édouard Leclerc, head of the chain, the scheme is a gesture for drivers during the busy summer travel period. “This weekend, as many July drivers will be returning home, August residents will be taking to the road for their vacation. There will be traffic. That is why I am announcing the renewal of our cost-price operation as a gesture for everyone leaving and returning home,” he said.
The cost-price scheme may not generate profit for the companies, but it could attract customers to their accompanying stores and restaurants, driving revenue from sales. Not all E.Leclerc stations are participating, including those serving motorway traffic, and certain fuels are excluded from the deal.
Fuel prices have stabilized in recent months after a sharp increase in previous years due to the war in Ukraine and the Covid-19 crisis. Although there were concerns about a potential price hike following the conflict between Iran and Israel, prices have remained stable so far
