The Labour Party (LP) of Rivers State has suspended Hilda Dokubo, its Caretaker Chairman, indefinitely due to allegations of wrongdoing, extortion, and carelessness.

Her suspension, launched by her ward in Asari-Toru Local Government Area, comes after repeated petitions accusing her of inflating party nomination costs, negotiating positions for personal gain, and mismanaging party funds.

According to LP officials in Ward 3 ASALGA, Dokubo levied inflated costs for councillors and chairmanship hopefuls during local elections, diverting any excess payments under the guise of service charges.

She is also accused of sabotaging the party during her 2023 House of Representatives campaign by allegedly encouraging candidates to compromise.

Furthermore, Dokubo allegedly failed to account for cash for party use and adopted a “divide and rule” leadership style, impeding the party’s advancement. Repeated invitations to address the allegations reportedly remained unanswered, resulting in her indefinite suspension.

Despite the claims, Dokubo downplayed the suspension, describing it as an attempt by some people to “try their luck.”

The Labour Party has requested an investigation into the allegations, indicating a probable shake-up in the party’s leadership in Rivers State.
