Man escapes prison by hiding in luggage of fellow cellmate as he’s released in France

Following a guy who escaped by sneaking himself into his cellmate’s suitcase as he was being released from prison after serving his term, France’s prison service announced on Saturday that it has opened an investigation. On Monday, the man was apprehended.

According to broadcaster BFMTV, the 20-year-old inmate broke out of Lyon-Corbas jail, which is located close to Lyon in southeast France, on Friday. According to the site, the escaped inmate was able to conceal himself in his laundry bag as he was leaving prison after his cellmate had served out his sentence.

According to prosecutors, the prisoner was taken into custody early on Monday in Corbas, close to Lyon, while coming out of a cellar. His other prisoner accomplice has not yet been taken into custody.

The prison staff told AFP that the detainee was serving multiple sentences.

He “took advantage of the liberation of his fellow inmate to hide himself in his luggage and get out,” the statement said.

According to a source close to the affair, the escaped prisoner was also being investigated in a case connected to organized crime, AFP reported.

The jail service also stated that Lyon prosecutors had launched their own investigations and that an internal inquiry was in progress.

“A series of serious malfunctions” and “accumulation of errors” led to the escape, prison administration director Sébastien Cauwel told BFMTV on Sunday.

“This is an extremely rare event that we have never experienced in this administration,” he said.
