In 2001, Brad Sigmon killed his ex-girlfriend’s parents by beating them with a baseball bat.

Sigmon acknowledged that he killed Gladys and David Larke, ages 59 and 62, respectively, by beating them in their house after their daughter ended their relationship.

And now, at 6:05 p.m. on Friday, the 67-year-old was executed by firing squad at the Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia, South Carolina.

Three prison guards who volunteered for the gruesome assignment fired weapons at his heart from a distance of 15 feet, and at 6:08 p.m., on-site medical personnel proclaimed him dead.

Four pieces of fried chicken, green beans, gravy-topped mashed potatoes, biscuits, cheesecake, and sweet tea were Sigmon’s final dinner.

His attorney issued a long speech that served as Sigmon’s final words. It was filled with biblical allusions and demanded that the death penalty be abolished.

After losing a last-minute plea to spare his life on Friday afternoon, Sigmon became the first person to be executed by firing squad in the United States since 2010 and just the fourth since the death penalty was reinstated 49 years ago.

On Friday night, dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the prison to voice their opposition to the death penalty, claiming it is cruel.

With straps across his brow and chin holding his head in place, Sigmon was strapped to an armless chair and had a white target with a red bullseye attached to his chest.

When the curtain was drawn to let spectators into the execution room at 6:01 p.m., he was already strapped in.

The condemned offender mumbled something to his lawyer and spiritual advisor while glancing at the witness chamber. His last words were audible.

Three members of the victims’ family, David and Gladys Larke, were among the witnesses.

Three members of the media, a prosecuting solicitor’s office official, Sigmon’s lawyer and spiritual advisor, and a sheriff’s investigator were also in attendance.
