The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has accused the Nigerian Police of persistent harassment and intimidation against its members, urging international human rights organizations to step in.
In a statement issued by Comrade Edeson Samuel, who serves as the group’s National Director of Information, MASSOB highlighted the case of Mr. Vitus Obumnaeme Ofido. Ofido, who is the Regional Director of Mobilization for Surulere in Lagos State, was reportedly detained unlawfully by the Lagos State Police Command because of his connection to the group.
The organization stated that Mr. Ofido was eventually freed by a ruling of the Lagos State High Court, aided by the actions of civil society groups. However, MASSOB claimed that plainclothes officers have continued to monitor his movements and made an unsuccessful attempt to arrest him again at his business premises.
“This alarming trend of intimidation and threats towards MASSOB members is not an isolated incident; it reflects a broader pattern of oppression against those advocating for self-determination and human rights in Nigeria,” the group said.
The organization appealed to the International Human Rights Commission and similar bodies to look into the situation and hold Nigerian security forces responsible for what it described as abuse of human rights in a democratic nation.
MASSOB reiterated its dedication to peaceful efforts aimed at achieving Biafra’s independence, asserting that continued persecution would not derail its mission.
