The sociocultural organization, Guardians of One Nigeria (GON), has emphasized that maintaining national security requires collective effort, not individual action. The group also urged politicians to refrain from circulating misleading information designed to undermine the country’s leadership and security systems.
Their statement was in response to online speculation claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had removed Matawalle, along with the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, and the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
In a release endorsed by the group’s President, Arch. Darius Ishakwu, and Secretary General, Chief Nurudeen Isiaka, GON reaffirmed that neither propaganda nor politically driven falsehoods would hinder the president’s dedication to protecting the nation.
“This kind of fake news, allegedly quoting the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, is not only baseless but dangerous,” the statement read.
“Whoever is behind this must understand that security is too delicate an issue to be used as a political weapon.”
GON, made up of former members of the military, paramilitary, and experts involved in grassroots security programs, praised Matawalle for significantly strengthening the country’s security landscape shortly after assuming his role.
“If Defence Ministers under previous administrations had shown even half of Matawalle’s dedication, Nigeria’s security challenges would not have reached this point,” GON stated.
“Just as the fake news was trending, Matawalle and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Chris Musa, were on the ground in Borno State, interacting directly with troops at the warfront and assessing the situation firsthand.”
The group stressed that combating terrorism and insurgency should not be treated as a spectacle for social media or used to gain political advantage. Rather, it urged every Nigerian to play a constructive role by engaging in community-based security efforts, sharing intelligence, and backing those on the front lines.
“Security is not a one-man show, and it is certainly not the sole responsibility of government,” the statement added. “This is a national responsibility. If you cannot help, at least don’t distract those who are doing the work.”
