The Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU), Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, has announced a scholarship scheme for all students enrolling in its agricultural science programmes, covering their entire duration of study.

The initiative, according to the institution, is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s food security agenda.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyinka Fuwape explained that the programme stands out because of its work-study structure, which combines classroom instruction with practical exposure. “The Agricultural Science programme at MCIU is unique, as it operates on a work-study structure, ensuring that students gain hands-on, practical experience alongside theoretical learning,” she said.

Prof. Fuwape added that through this model, students will take part in fieldwork, agricultural projects, and internships that immerse them in modern farming techniques and innovative agricultural practices.

The announcement was confirmed at the close of the university’s 10th Convocation Ceremony, where graduates of the 2024/2025 session received certificates and prizes, and distinguished individuals were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.

At the event, Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman, Prof. Anthony Kila, applauded the scholarship scheme. “The announcement is a delightful and praiseworthy initiative that gives hope to the needy and the talented and an example of how universities can be a source of solutions in a country that abounds with needs and talent,” he remarked.

The convocation, held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, was graced by the Delta State Governor, traditional rulers, business leaders, academics, and elder statesmen, including Elder Solomon Asemota.

Among the highlights, the overall best graduating student, Stephanie Adebor, was honoured with a special prize for her academic excellence. Honorary degrees were also awarded to notable figures such as business mogul and senator, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim; Trinidad and Tobago-born David Raggay; and architect Mark Giwa-Amu.

Commenting further on the scholarship initiative, Registrar of MCIU, Dr. Thomas Kolo, said, “This initiative reflects the unwavering commitment of the university’s Chancellor and Co-founder, Dr. Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, to fostering sustainable agricultural development and creating opportunities for aspiring students passionate about agriculture.”

In his closing remarks, Prof. Anthony Kila stressed the importance of collective support: “The scholarship for the agricultural science programme is both an opportunity and a challenge, and I call on the private and public sectors, as well as individuals, to support the programme in any way they can.
