Meet the military lawyer who argued with Abacha over the detention of Obasanjo, Yar’adua and others

A meticulous military lawyer and the epitome of an Army Officer, Major General Abdullahi Sarki Mukhtar (rtd) famously clashed with his superior, General Sani Abacha, about how to handle those suspected of plotting the 1995 coup.

Sarki Mukhtar was one of the few military personnel with the guts to speak out against the junta’s imprisonment and abuse of Obasanjo, Yar’adua, and the other accused individuals.

Sarki Mukhtar restated his position that they were innocent since there was insufficient proof to support their detention and subsequent conviction. Not only did he express his disapproval of their imprisonment, but he also begged for their release.
