Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Saturday announced retaliatory tariffs in response to the U.S. decision to impose 25 percent tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico, triggering a trade war between the two neighboring countries.

Sheinbaum, in a post on X, stated that her government aimed for dialogue rather than confrontation with its primary trade partner to the north, but Mexico had been compelled to respond in kind.

“I’ve instructed my economy minister to implement the plan B we’ve been working on, which includes tariff and non-tariff measures in defense of Mexico’s interests,” Sheinbaum posted, without detailing which U.S. products her government would target.

Reporters learned that the United States is Mexico’s largest foreign market, and in 2023, Mexico surpassed China as the top destination for U.S. exports.

It was further discovered that Mexico had been preparing potential retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports, ranging from 5% to 20%, including pork, cheese, fresh produce, and manufactured steel and aluminum, according to sources familiar with the issue.

In a post on X, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard stated that Trump’s tariffs were a clear violation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

“Plan B is underway. We will win,” Ebrard said.

Recalling that U.S. exports to Mexico totaled more than $322 billion in 2023, according to Census Bureau data, while the U.S. imported over $475 billion worth of Mexican goods.

In her post, Sheinbaum also dismissed the White House’s claim that drug cartels have an alliance with the Mexican government, a point used by Trump’s administration to justify the tariffs.

Trump stated that the tariffs were due to Mexico’s failure to prevent fentanyl, a deadly opioid, from entering the United States, as well as what he referred to as uncontrolled migration.

Sheinbaum highlighted her government’s record since she assumed office in October, including the seizure of 20 million doses of fentanyl and the detention of over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.
