Mohbad: Naira Marley testifies in court, as coroner summons Sam Larry

Nigerian singer Naira Marley appeared before a Magistrate Court in Ikorodu on Friday to testify in the Coroner’s inquest aimed at determining the cause of Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad’s, death.

Naira Marley participated virtually, sharing what he knew about Mohbad’s passing and attempting to clear himself of all allegations made against him.

He began by explaining to Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi that he signed the late Mohbad to his record label, Marlian Records, with plans to produce four albums. However, these albums were never completed due to ongoing disagreements between Mohbad and his manager, Opere Babatunde.

The singer denied ever threatening or molesting Mohbad, referencing a police report that cleared him of such accusations. He dismissed the claims of molestation as being purely imaginary.

When questioned about the viral video in which Mohbad stated that Naira Marley and the entire Marlian crew should be held responsible if anything happened to him, Marley testified that Mohbad and his parents later apologized for the video, which was made while the artist was reportedly under the influence of drugs.

Naira Marley further insisted that there were no disputes or disagreements between him and Mohbad. He also denied having any involvement in Mohbad’s death, stating that the last time he saw the artist was a year before his passing and that he was not in the country at the time of Mohbad’s death.

A second witness, Oluwasanmi Falade, the lawyer for the late Mohbad, disagreed with Marley’s statement, confirming to the court that there had indeed been a dispute between Marlian Records and Mohbad regarding unpaid royalties. Falade mentioned that Mohbad had written several times to Marlian Records about the issue, but received no response. He added that the matter is now being litigated in the Federal High Court.

Falade also testified that Mohbad was attacked by music promoter Sam Larry at Lekki Beach, and following his advice, Mohbad had reported the incident to the Force Headquarters, though attempts to arrest Sam Larry had been unsuccessful.

After hearing the testimonies, Magistrate Shotobi summoned Sam Larry to testify before the Coroner’s court at the next adjourned date. The Coroner also ordered that the address of Mohbad’s driver be confirmed so that a witness summons can be issued for him to testify.

The Coroner further instructed the pathologist who conducted Mohbad’s independent autopsy to submit a copy of the findings to the Coroner’s court and the Chief Coroner before the next adjourned date.

The inquest has been adjourned to April 11 to hear the testimony of Sam Larry.
