Two serving police sergeants have been arrested in connection with a suspected armed robbery operation, and the Benue State Police Command has confirmed this. The operation led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle and weapons.
Police sources revealed that the command’s surveillance patrol team acted on reliable information to stop a red Toyota Corolla (2010 model) with the registration number NEG-35-AE, which had previously been stolen at gunpoint in Akwanga and was en route to Keffi.
It was reported that the suspects are said to have violated a police checkpoint at Angwan Lambu, leading security personnel to pursue them.
Eventually, they were stopped and taken into custody at a military checkpoint near Uke.
“On their arrest, the following exhibits were recovered: one AK-47 rifle with breech number, three magazines loaded with 16 rounds of live ammunition, one black face mask, three mobile phones and other personal belongings,” the command said.
Further identification showed that the detained officers are Sgt. Shedrack Abednego from the STS (FID) in Abuja and Sgt. John Ayuba from the CP Crack Squad in the FCT Command.
As per police sources, inquiries are still in progress to ascertain the extent of their supposed involvement and to find out if they are linked to other criminal activities.
