Stakeholders in the health, education, and security sectors have emphasized the need for grassroots and family-based advocacy to combat the rising menace of drug abuse. “The burden of addiction not only weakens individuals but also threatens national development,” warned Prof. Ifeoma Okoye, Director of the MTN Foundation. “We need to build a massive awareness network rooted in families and communities, with women at the forefront of this fight.”

The Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, highlighted the severe consequences of substance abuse, including drug overdose and drug-related challenges. “It often starts with one small exposure, then another, until the child is intoxicated and their future destroyed,” she cautioned

Dr. Mosun Belo-Olusoga, Chairman of the MTN Foundation, emphasized the role of parents and homes in shaping behavior. “Sometimes, it even starts from the home. When children see their parents drinking, they want to try it too. As parents, we are the role models for our children,” she said.

The Lagos Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Abubakar Liman Wali, stressed that prevention is a collective responsibility. “We all have to come out and see how we can invest in prevention,” he urged.

The advocacy walk, which started at Alao Aka Bashorun Garden in Gbagada and ended at the University of Lagos, served as a powerful reminder of the need for collective action against substance abuse. By working together, stakeholders can build a society that is free from the scourge of drug abuse
