My children can’t get Nigerian citizenship because I’m a woman, yet Nigerians easily become UK citizens – Kemi Badenoch

According to Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, her gender prevents her from granting her children Nigerian citizenship.

In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Sunday, Badenoch attempted to compare and contrast Nigeria’s and Britain’s immigration policy.

Immigrants frequently take advantage of the British system, she said CNN, making the UK open to danger.

She quickly said “no” when asked if she would allow a Nigerian immigrant to establish a “mini-Nigeria” in the UK for cultural assimilation.

“That is not right. Nigerians would not tolerate that. That’s not something that many countries would accept,” she added.

“There are many people who come to our country, to the UK, who do things that would not be acceptable in their countries.”

Badenoch emphasized her claim by pointing to her children’s “inability” to become Nigerians.

“It’s virtually impossible, for example, to get Nigerian citizenship. 
I have that citizenship by virtue of my parents, I can’t give it to my children because I’m a woman,” she said.

“Yet loads of Nigerians come to the UK and stay for a relatively free period of time, acquire British citizenship. We need to stop being naive.”

Badenoch and her husband are parents to three children.

A person born outside of Nigeria is a Nigerian citizen if one or both of their parents are Nigerian, according to clause 25(1)(c) of the Nigerian Constitution, which contradicts Badenoch’s assertion.
This implies that citizenship by birth can be obtained with just one Nigerian parent.

Olukemi Adegoke, who was born in the UK in 1980 to Yoruba parents from Nigeria, spent a large portion of her early years in Nigeria before coming back to the UK when she was sixteen.

Later, she married Scottish financier Hamish Badenoch, taking his last name, Kemi Badenoch.

She served in the cabinet of Prime Ministers Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak from 2022 to 2024 before to being appointed Conservative leader.

Badenoch’s tough stance on immigration has been a major factor in her popularity.

She stated in her interview on Sunday that under her direction, it would be “much harder” for foreigners to obtain British citizenship.
