My wife slaps me at will – Man tells court

Olawale Idowu, a car spare-parts dealer, filed for divorce from his estranged wife, Yemisi, after 13 years of marriage on Friday in a Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, citing persistent violence.

Idowu, who lives at No. 25, Okeolode, in Ibadan’s Aremo neighbourhood, bemoaned the fact that he was sorry he wed her.

“My lord, in spite of my relentless endurance in our matrimony, Yemisi remained troublesome.

“In fact, I abandoned the house to her on December 16, 2023 when she violently attacked me in the midnight.

“Yemisi slaps me and tears my clothes at will,” he said.

He stated that upon receiving a summons to appear in court, she tore the document and threw it towards him.

He presented the summons and the torn clothing as evidence.

In response to the accusations made against her, Yemisi declared that she was certain her husband had left her for a different lady.

“It is true that there was a midnight fight between both of us in December.

“Idowu’s mother was aware of all that took place, rather than resolve the matter amicably for us, she threatened to deal with me.

“My mother in-law called in the Police and I was arrested,” Yemisi said.

The president of the court, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, said that none of the evidence presented to the court suggested that a bride price had been presented, which is required for a legitimate customary marriage in Nigeria.

According to Akintayo, Idowu and Yemisi’s marriage never existed in the first place, hence there was no reason to dissolve it.

In defiance of Idowu’s pleas, the court’s president granted Yemisi custody of the couple’s three children.

She gave Yemisi instructions to share responsibility for the children’s upbringing, education, and other needs while also guaranteeing that Idowu would always have access to them.

They were told to part ways going forward by Akintayo.

Henceforth, She also granted the order restraining Yemisi from threatening, harassing, disturbing and interfering in Idowu’s private life.
