N70,000: Tinubu makes new promises to states, private sector over the minimum wage

The Federal Government will look for ways to help states and private sector organisations pay the recently authorised N70,000 national minimum wage, according to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement released on Thursday, Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, revealed this.

According to ZINGTIE, Tinubu declared a minimum wage of N70,000 during a meeting on Thursday at the Presidential Villa with the presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.

In addition, Tinubu promised to raise the country’s minimum wage every three years from five years.

The President reportedly declared that he will exercise his discretionary authority to address the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities’ (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU.

“President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.

“President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals to pay the minimum wage.

“The Labour leaders applauded President Tinubu for the fatherly gesture as the President also promised to use his discretionary powers meet the demands of university unions demanding unpaid 4 months salaries,” the statement said.

Recall that negotiations over a new minimum wage have come to a standstill between the federal government and labour unions.

Earlier, organised labour demanded a N250,000 minimum salary, while the Federal Government insisted on an N62,000 wage.
