Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Seriake Dickson, has condemned the Federal High Court ruling ordering the deregistration of the party, insisting that the judgment is unlawful and will be challenged through the courts.
Responding to the decision delivered on Friday by Justice Isah Dashen of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Dickson described the verdict as lacking legal foundation and alleged that it was intended to weaken the credibility and growing influence of the NDC.
He argued that the judgment poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s multi-party system and represents an attempt to limit democratic participation in the country.
“All I can say is that the order lacks legal merit and is intended to affect the foundational credibility and efforts of our party. The order is illegal and will not stand.
“It is against multi-party democracy, anti-democratic in nature, and aimed at narrowing and stifling the democratic space. It will be resisted by all of us and by all lovers of democracy in Nigeria,” Dickson said.
The former Bayelsa State governor disclosed that the party had already assembled a legal team to immediately begin efforts aimed at overturning the court order.
He urged party members, supporters, and candidates to remain calm and continue their political activities without fear.
Dickson expressed confidence that the NDC would emerge victorious in the legal battle, maintaining that the judgment would not disrupt the party’s preparations for future electoral contests.
He also questioned the legal status of the applicant, identified as the Peace Movement Party, contending that it was neither a registered political party nor among the associations that applied for registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in 2025.
According to him, the association lacked sufficient interest in the matter and ought not to have been regarded as a necessary party in the suit.
Dickson further alleged that certain individuals unsettled by the rapid growth and acceptance of the NDC were responsible for the legal action, claiming that the party’s achievements within a short period had created anxiety among political opponents.
He reaffirmed the party’s determination to pursue every available legal option to reverse what he described as a judicial error and reiterated the NDC’s commitment to promoting and protecting multi-party democracy in Nigeria.
