As part of activities marking Menstrual Hygiene Month, the non-governmental organisation HopeForHer, in collaboration with Ugoeze Ijeoma Nwokoma, has donated sanitary pads to over 500 female students of Comprehensive Secondary School, Umuokanne, in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State. The donation is part of the group’s Pad Bank Initiative, launched on May 28, to combat poverty and promote menstrual health and dignity among schoolgirls across the state.

The founder of HopeForHer, Miss Chiamaka Enyia, noted that the initiative was rooted in her personal struggle growing up without access to menstrual hygiene products after the loss of her mother. “I realised that many young girls miss school simply because they lack access to menstrual products. Our Pad Bank initiative is about more than just providing pads — it’s about dignity, education, and equality,” she stated.

Enyia explained that the Pad Bank had been stocked with over 2,000 sanitary pads and included a tracking system to monitor distribution and ensure it supports more than 500 schoolgirls. “HopeForHer is committed to empowering women and girls by addressing systemic barriers such as period poverty and the lack of menstrual health education,” she added

The traditional ruler of the Umuokanne community, His Royal Highness, Eze Matthew Nwokoma, commended the initiative and expressed the willingness of the royal family to ensure its sustainability. “The Pad Bank is a wonderful project that will stand the test of time in our community and its environs because of its benefits to the girl child,” he said.

Students who benefited from the project expressed their appreciation, with one student, Emmanuella Ndubisi, saying, “I am very happy I took part in the event. I want them to come back again. They taught us how to wear pads.” Another student, Elejiechi Gladys, shared a similar sentiment, “I feel very excited to be part of the programme. They taught us so many things.
