A non-governmental organization, HopeForHer, in collaboration with Ugoeze Ijeoma Nwokoma, has donated sanitary pads to over 500 female students of Comprehensive Secondary School, Umuokanne, in Imo State. The donation is part of the group’s Pad Bank Initiative, launched on May 28, to combat period poverty and promote menstrual health and dignity among schoolgirls.
The founder of HopeForHer, Miss Chiamaka Enyia, stated that the initiative was born out of her personal struggle with accessing menstrual hygiene products after losing her mother. “I realised that many young girls miss school simply because they lack access to menstrual products. Our Pad Bank initiative is about more than just providing pads — it’s about dignity, education, and equality,” she said.
The Pad Bank has been stocked with over 2,000 sanitary pads and includes a tracking system to monitor distribution. Enyia added, “HopeForHer is committed to empowering women and girls by addressing systemic barriers such as period poverty and the lack of menstrual health education.”
The Traditional Ruler of Umuokanne community, His Royal Highness, Eze Matthew Nwokoma, commended the initiative and pledged the Royal Family’s support for its sustainability. “The Pad Bank is a wonderful project that will stand the test of time in our community and its environs because of its benefits to the girl child,” he said.
Students who benefited from the project expressed gratitude, with one student, Emmanuella Ndubisi, saying, “I am very happy I took part in the event. I want them to come back again. They taught us how to wear pads.” Another student, Elejiechi Gladys, added, “I feel very excited to be part of the programme. They taught us so many things.
