Niger Speaker halts plan to marry off 100 orphans, accuses Minister of interference

Abdulamlik Sarkindaji, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, has cancelled the hundred orphan girls’ wedding that was supposed to happen in his district.

According to Sarkindaji, the decision was made in reaction to a court case brought by Uju Ohanenye, the Minister of Women Affairs, to halt the wedding.

During a news briefing on Tuesday, the Speaker revealed this and voiced his displeasure that the minister had overreached her authority.

Additionally, Sarkindaji said that the minister will pay for the wedding.

According to ZINGTIE, the Speaker launched a constituent project to support state-wide banditry-affected female orphans.

As part of the effort, Sarkindaji, representing the Mariga State Constituency, announced plans to marry off 100 female orphans, covering the dowries.

In addition, he promised to pay the groom’s dowries, saying he had all the supplies needed to marry the 100 girls properly.

The Speaker assured them that everything had been planned for their welfare in their new homes as if they were any other child marrying in accordance with Islamic customs.

To prevent Sarkindaji from marrying off the orphaned girls, the Minister of Women Affairs filed a petition with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and requested a judicial injunction.

Kennedy-Ohanenye called the proposed marriage “unacceptable” and emphasised that a thorough investigation had been launched into the matter.
