Following the tanker explosion at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has issued a warning against traffic irresponsibility.
Over 60 people were killed, numerous others were injured, and stores and property were damaged in the Saturday tragedy.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, made this announcement in a statement on Sunday.

The statement claims that a truck transporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and caught fire, causing the explosion.

The IGP offered his condolences to the Niger State administration and people, calling the situation “devastating.”

The IGP instructed all State Commissioners of Police to work with other traffic management organizations to bolster their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) in reaction to the event.

He underlined that in order to stop catastrophes in the future, traffic laws must be strictly enforced.

“Negligence and disregard for traffic laws are major contributors to such incidents.

“I am instructing all Commissioners of Police to work closely with traffic agencies to ensure that our roads are safer and traffic laws are strictly enforced.”

Additionally, the IGP urged drivers and car owners to put safety first by making sure their vehicles are roadworthy and compliant with traffic laws.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility. Every driver, vehicle owner, and stakeholder must play their part to prevent unnecessary loss of lives and property,” he added.

In order to maintain road safety, Egbetokun called on the public and transportation operators to behave properly.

In addition, he prayed for the deceased’s souls and asked for a speedy recovery for the wounded.
