An 18-year-old British man named Marcus Fakana was given a one-year prison sentence in Dubai for having a “holiday romance” with a 17-year-old female who is now 18. Fakana met the girl, who is also from London, while he and his family were in the United Arab Emirates.

The couple planned to stay together after returning to the UK, but they kept their relationship a secret from the girl’s strict family.

After they returned to the UK, the girl’s mother discovered their private conversations and photos, which prompted her to call Dubai police. In September, Fakana was taken into custody at his family’s hotel in Dubai.

He was charged in accordance with UAE legislation, which has a rigorous 18-year-old consent requirement. Legally speaking, the girl was a minor at the time.

The campaign organisation Detained in Dubai has criticised Fakana’s case, calling it a “disgrace.” According to the group, the prosecution handled Fakana’s case improperly, preventing it from being initially addressed as a misdemeanour.

The British government has been urged to step in by Fakana and his family, and Foreign Secretary David Lammy has been approached.

Additionally, the family intends to appeal the punishment. Regarding the situation, the Foreign Office has acknowledged that it is in communication with Fakana’s family. This case is especially complicated because Dubai’s legal system is renowned for its rigorous enforcement of regulations pertaining to drugs, alcohol, and extramarital sex.

As they continue to pursue justice in the case, Fakana’s family hopes that the issue will be reviewed.
