The Nigerian government has announced that it has launched an investigation into a reported leak involving the passwords of 183 million Google Mail users.

An official from the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), who chose to remain unnamed, revealed this development in an interview.

The statement follows a recent report that sounded the alarm about a massive cyberattack, which may have compromised the security of up to 183 million email accounts, including Gmail users.

The leaked information circulating online reportedly contains not only the email addresses but also the passwords linked to those accounts, affecting users in Nigeria among others.

As a result, the breach could potentially grant hackers access not just to email accounts but also to other platforms and services that rely on Gmail credentials for login.

This renewed alert came from ‘Have I Been Pwned’, a data breach monitoring platform operated by Troy Hunt.

According to the Independent newspaper, the website has recorded breaches from 917 different sites and over 15 billion affected accounts.

In response, a trusted insider at the NDPC confirmed that the commission has already initiated a probe to assess the scale of the incident and its possible impact on Gmail and other email users in Nigeria.

“We’ve begun an investigation into the data breach with Gmail and others. We are on top of the matter to know the extent of the impact on Nigerian users,” he told reporters.
