Former Minister of External Affairs, Bolaji Akinyemi, has stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to appoint credible individuals to fill existing ambassadorial vacancies.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television on Friday, Professor Akinyemi highlighted the critical importance of promptly addressing the vacant diplomatic positions.

“I believe credible appointments should be made to the vacant ambassadorial posts. We need to fill them,” he said.

He explained that although digital access provides information, effective diplomacy still depends heavily on direct engagement between ambassadors and foreign governments.

“The absence of ambassadors does not deny us information. But diplomacy runs on ambassadorial contact, the interaction between governments and ambassadors,” he noted.

Akinyemi concluded by emphasizing that ambassadors must be sent back to their respective posts without further delay.
