Nigeria Police to commence enforcement of e-CMR, sets deadline

The Nigerian Police Force has said that, over the next 14 days, it will start enforcing the digitalized Central Motor Registry, (e-CMR).

It stated that the enforcement would explicitly start on July 29, 2024.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, disclosed this in a communiqué on Saturday.

The e-CMR, according to Adejobi, is a sophisticated, real-time online database of motor vehicle data that is intended to aid in police operations, investigations, and the fight against crimes involving vehicles, such as armed robbery, banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping.

He claims that it will greatly strengthen the country’s framework for safety and security by modernising and digitising the motor vehicle registration system.

“Following the directives of the IGP, services such as change of ownership, change of license number, change of engine, and change of chassis/body would become seamless as the e-CMR system would ensure the validation of vehicle genuineness and ownership, enhancing the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles effectively, and preventing the purchase of stolen vehicles by innocent buyers,” he said.

Adejobi also exhorted the public to visit cmris.npf.gov.ng to receive the digitalized CMR certificate.

Explaining the benefits of the exercise, He said: “The Nigeria Police Force, while seeking for the understanding and support of all well-meaning Nigerians and residents on this initiative, remains committed to leveraging technology and strategic approaches to enhance public safety and national security.

“The enforcement of the e-CMR is necessary to ensure a safer and secure environment for vehicle ownership and decimate the trend of vehicle theft by greatly reducing the possibility of selling stolen vehicles in the country.”

For the best safety and security, Adejobi urged all car owners and users to quickly embrace and key into the effort.
