Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has boasted that the G5 governors’ actions and decision stabilized Nigeria following the 2023 election.
Recall that the Wike-led G5, which consists of five sitting governors, declined to support Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of their party, the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, in the run-up to the 2023 election.
The group included Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia and Ifeanyi Uguanyi of Enugu State and led by then Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.
The governors’ complaint, which was allegedly based on the North-South zoning arrangement, ended the PDP’s chances of winning the presidency in 2023 because the group believed that Atiku, a native of the North, should have been the party’s presidential candidate from the South.
The G5’s actions, in which Wike and his associates publicly opposed the PDP and supported Bola Tinubu, a southerner and All Progressives Congress candidate, helped the party lose.
Speaking to PDP members across the 36 federation states and the Federal Capital Territory on Monday under the aegis of “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP,” Wike claimed that the actions of the G5 governors in 2023 prevented Nigeria from going into crisis.
He claims that despite the fact that the group’s choice benefited the candidate of their party, the G5 does not regret its move.
“You may like us, you may hate us; the truth is if G5 did not take our decision, this country would have been in crisis.
“It doesn’t matter who the beneficiary was, but the right thing had to be done, and we still stand by that decision.
“We have continued to emphasise that the party’s constitution and that of the country should be respected.
“If the party had listened to what we said, we wouldn’t have been where we are today,” he said.
Thus, he counseled PDP leaders to cease acting without consequence.
