Nigerian Govt now run by kleptocrats – Ndume

The Nigerian government, according to Chief Senate Whip Ali Ndume, is currently led by “kleptocrats.”

Ndume made this claim during a Thursday interview that ZINGTIE watched on Arise Television.

According to him, “The government is also populated by kleptocrats, but unfortunately that is not what the President is up to; he really meant renewed hope, but you can only do that when you have people around you that are on the same type of thinking.”

The member expressed concern about recent government initiatives, including the cybercrime levy, which encountered pushback from the general population.

“When the President realized that he had not heard about it, he quickly suspended it.”

He emphasised the serious problem of hunger and food scarcity while pointing out that inflation had reached 40%.

“In some places, even with your money, you won’t find the food items you want to buy, which is very dangerous,” Ndume added.

The lawmaker from Borno clarified that while current data from the UN and World Food Programme classifies Nigeria as a hotspot, the country has never been listed as having a serious food crisis or food insecurity.

He criticised the President’s restricted access, pointing out that the President frequently leaves first and that certain ministers only get to see him during council sessions.

Ndume urged the President to “get the right people into office” and control his cabinet with Democrats, stressing the need of utilising Nigeria’s natural and human resources.

He backed the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy in the hopes that it would end corruption and enable the public to benefit from savings.

However, in order to effectively handle the subsidy issue, he recommended the use of food stamps.

The senator described how he sent messages about public outrage to people in the Presidential Villa, only to have the opposition blamed in return.
