Nigerian govt to hold Democracy Day lecture June 11

The Federal Government has released the official timetable for this year’s Democracy Day events, with a public lecture scheduled for June 11.

This was announced in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

According to Imohiosen, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to coordinate the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, with the goal of making it a memorable occasion.

Speaking on behalf of the SGF, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Atiku Bagudu highlighted the importance of Democracy Day as a time to honour those who laid the foundation for Nigeria’s democratic system.

“It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the inaugural meeting of the 26th Democracy Day Celebration Inter-Ministerial Committee. This year’s Democracy Day Celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of our founding fathers to attain independence for our dear nation and to retrospect on the daunting challenges and trauma that other democratic champions faced in their collective efforts to wrest power from the grip of military dictatorship. To celebrate this day in their remembrance is to honour and recognise their place in history,” he said.

The released program outlines several activities leading up to and including Democracy Day 2025. These include:

A World Press Briefing and a special Juma’at prayer on Friday, June 6;
A Church Service on Sunday, June 8;
A youth-focused event on Tuesday, June 9;
A public lecture on Wednesday, June 11;
The official Presidential Address and Parade set for Thursday, June 12.

The IMC is led by the SGF, with Nadungu Gagare, the Permanent Secretary of the Political and Economic Affairs Office at the OSGF, serving as Secretary.

Committee members include key figures such as:

Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy;
Mohammed Idris Malagi, Minister of Information and National Orientation;
Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning;
Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs;
Barr. Nyesom Wike, Minister of the FCT;
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior;
Hadiza Bala-Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination;
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun;
DSS Director General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi;
Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, Commander of the Guards Brigade;
Dr. Nnamdi Maurice Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, OSGF;
Kachollom Daju, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health.

The committee’s responsibilities include planning and overseeing all approved Democracy Day activities, bringing in relevant individuals or groups as needed, documenting the events for historical purposes, and handling any other tasks required to ensure the successful execution of the celebrations.
