The Nigerian Red Cross Society, with support from the British Red Cross Disaster Management team in Lagos, has launched the second phase of its Food Security and Livelihood Intervention in Agboyi community, Lagos State. The initiative targets hundreds of vulnerable households and builds on the success of the first phase, which provided ₦310,000 to 180 households to strengthen their businesses.

According to Olushola Tejuosho, Branch Communication Officer, “The funds empowered families to become more self-reliant, especially in navigating the country’s current challenging economic climate and to build their resilience against the impact of floods.” The second phase will provide direct business support to 270 households within the community.

The project began with the training of 40 Red Cross volunteers, who have been deployed to commence the registration of beneficiaries in Agboyi 1, 2 & 3 Communities. All registered beneficiaries will participate in a compulsory two-day financial literacy training to equip them with essential money management and business skills.

After the training, beneficiaries will receive their funds via pre-loaded ATM cards. Tejuosho noted that the project is part of a wider disaster management effort targeted at flood-prone areas, saying, “This programme forms part of a long-term disaster management intervention that has been ongoing in Agboyi for the past five years in response to recurrent flooding in the area.”

The initiative aims to strengthen the livelihoods of vulnerable households and promote sustainable recovery. By targeting both immediate needs and long-term resilience, the Nigerian Red Cross Society and British Red Cross Disaster Management team are working together to make a lasting impact in the community.
