Troops of the Nigerian Army have apprehended no fewer than 17 individuals suspected of vandalism and confiscated over 45,000 litres of illegally obtained petroleum products.
This was revealed in a statement issued on Sunday by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Division.
According to the report, soldiers on patrol in Rivers State, particularly around the Okarki Community in Ahoada West Local Government Area, intercepted a Toyota 4Runner SUV transporting more than 1,600 litres of what is believed to be stolen diesel.
The driver reportedly escaped, abandoning the vehicle at the scene.
In a separate operation within the same local government, 23 sacks containing refined petroleum substances were discovered, while in Degema, a wooden boat ferrying similar products was taken into custody.
In Obiafor, located in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, troops identified a damaged pipeline and retrieved stolen condensate from the site.
“Items recovered included a 250-metre hose, three-inch metal pipes, and six sacks containing 300 litres of illegally refined AGO,” the statement partly read.
Operations also extended to Delta State, where troops uncovered an illicit fuel storage location in Ogwu Community, Warri South Local Government Area. There, they found a tanker truck suspected to be filled with stolen diesel, as well as a massive storage facility containing over 20,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), along with equipment such as pumping and metering systems.
Additional discoveries included two empty tanks and a 20,000-litre tanker truck, registered as BEN 223 ZW from Edo State, reportedly carrying more than 10,000 litres of unlawfully refined AGO.
In Bayelsa State, military raids in Biseni, situated in Yenagoa Local Government Area, led to the destruction of illegal refining pits and processing sites.
A different operation in Okordia intercepted a Toyota Camry loaded with containers of AGO.
“At Okordia in Yenagoa LGA, a Toyota Camry with registration number ASB 71 BG, loaded with over 600 litres of AGO, was intercepted,” the statement disclosed.
In Akwa Ibom State, Lieutenant Danjuma emphasized that intensified patrols continued along areas notorious for oil theft, effectively curbing the activities of criminals and obstructing their distribution networks.
The Army reiterated its commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure, minimizing economic sabotage, and promoting environmental recovery throughout the Niger Delta.
