Nigerians demand Tinubu’s attention after Islamic Police, Hisbah warned Christians against eating in public

Numerous Nigerians have urged Governor Kabir Yusuf and President Bola Tinubu to rein in the excesses of the Kano State Hisbah Board Department of Public Enlightenment, which warned Christians and other non-Muslims in the state against eating in public during Ramadan.

In an interview with AIT Live, the Director-General of the Board, Abba Sai’Idu, revealed that it is unlawful for Christians and other non-Muslims to eat in public and tempt those who are fasting by doing so.

The Hisbah Boss went on to say that during the holy month, the enforcement squad was patrolling the city more frequently to apprehend any Muslim seen participating in any behaviour that was against Islamic customs.

Following the warning, a worried Nigerian posted on X with the following response: “Christians and citizens of other fate has nothing to do with Ramadan. Hisbah is getting it wrong and President Tinubu and Gov Kabir Yusuf’s attention should be called.”

A human rights’ activist, James Fashola said: “The federal government should check the excesses of Hisbah, why should you involve Christians in this?”

Recall that on Monday, March 11, 2024, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, stated that it was the first day of Ramadan 1445AH, marking the start of the country’s holy month of fasting.

The Kano State Hisbah Board detained eleven Muslims on Wednesday for breaking the Ramadan fast by eating throughout the day.
