Nigeria’s gas sector achieved a dual milestone in July 2025, with average daily production climbing to 7.59 billion standard cubic feet (bscf) while gas flaring fell to a record low of 7.16 per cent, according to new figures released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

In a statement issued on Saturday via its official channels, the Commission described the development as a rare energy achievement. “The simultaneous growth in output and decline in flaring underscores the Commission’s drive to boost production while advancing its 2030 zero-flare commitment,” it said.

The report showed that average daily output in July marked an 8.58 per cent increase compared to the 6.99 bscfd recorded in 2024, and a 9.84 per cent rise from the 6.91 bscfd posted in 2023. “The 7.59 bscfd daily average also represents a sustained rise in gas production over the past three years,” NUPRC added.

On flaring, the regulator highlighted steady progress, noting: “Despite an increase in production, gas flaring fell to 7.16 per cent in July 2025, down from 7.55 per cent in 2024 and 7.38 per cent in the same period of 2023.” The Commission reiterated its determination to meet Nigeria’s “commitment to end routine gas flaring by 2030.”

To achieve this, NUPRC said it has launched several gas reduction and decarbonisation programmes, including the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme, a Decarbonisation and Sustainability Blueprint, and initiatives promoting Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The regulator added that it is also “integrating sustainability into project planning through the Upstream Petroleum Decarbonisation Template.”

The report also provided updates on Domestic Gas Delivery Obligation (DGDO) performance. In July, compliance stood at 72.5 per cent, up from 71.8 per cent in June. Performance trends since January showed fluctuating but generally strong compliance: 72.2 per cent in January, 73.5 per cent in February, 70.8 per cent in March, 73.7 per cent in April, and 73.0 per cent in May

Breakdown by contract type showed that Marginal Sole Risk operators accounted for 63 per cent of total gas production during the period, while Production Sharing Contracts delivered 24 per cent. Joint Venture contracts contributed 10 per cent, and Sole Risk operators the remaining 3 per cent.

On utilisation, year-to-date data revealed that 35.88 per cent of output was exported, 27.82 per cent supplied to the domestic market, and 29.13 per cent channelled to field and plant operations. Companies mainly deployed gas for in-house activities such as fuel, gas lifting, and reinjection for pressure maintenance.

Gas-to-power supply also strengthened notably. Daily deliveries rose 3.48 per cent month-on-month, from 833.86 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) in June to 862.86 mmscf/d in July—the highest in three months.

Earlier figures showed deliveries averaging 780.23 mmscf/d in January, 849.37 mmscf/d in February, and peaking at 886.83 mmscf/d in March. April deliveries stood at 886.7 mmscf/d, followed by 837.64 mmscf/d in May and 833.86 mmscf/d in June.

NUPRC concluded that these gains highlight Nigeria’s progress in both energy security and sustainability. “Gas remains central to Nigeria’s transition plan, and the Commission will continue to work with operators to deepen production, expand domestic utilisation, and ensure environmentally responsible operations,” it said
