Nine Chinese nationals were convicted of cyberterrorism and internet fraud and given a one-year prison sentence by a Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.

They entered a guilty plea during hearings on Thursday, June 5, 2025, and Justice D. E. Osiagor delivered the verdict.

The offenders were captured in December 2024 as part of a massive sting operation, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The group is a part of a larger network of 792 suspects who are allegedly involved in fraud schemes involving romance and cryptocurrency investments.

Li Dong, Deng Wei Qiang, Huang Bo, Xiong Zhen, Lai Rui Feng, Zhao Xiao Hui, Lui Hai Rong, Lui Gang, and Du Ji Feng were among the suspects who were formally accused in February 2025, according to EFCC in a statement released on X,

The single-count charges focused on breaking Section 27 (1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 by gaining illegal access to computer systems with the intention of upsetting Nigeria’s social and economic infrastructure, which is punished under Section 18(1).

Nnaemeka Omewa, the prosecution attorney for the EFCC, asked for sentencing following their guilty pleas; the defense did not object to this request.

Each defendant was given a one-year prison sentence by the court, which took effect on December 10, 2024, the date of their arrest. Additionally, each prisoner received a N1,000,000 fine.

In addition, Justice Osiagor mandated that the nine individuals be returned to China within seven days of serving their sentences.

Mobile phones, laptops, PCs, and routers were among the items seized from the prisoners and turned over to the federal government.
