The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has called on South-East governors and National Assembly members to take immediate action regarding reports about the worsening health condition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The organization is urging these leaders to urgently appeal to President Bola Tinubu to secure Kanu’s release.

In a statement released on Thursday, FENRAD warned that any delay in responding could have serious consequences.

This appeal comes ahead of Friday’s decision on a no-case submission by Kanu concerning the terrorism charges brought against him by the Nigerian Government.

Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, Executive Director of FENRAD, called on South-East leaders to promptly intervene and support the release of the IPOB leader.

FENRAD, a well-known civil rights and advocacy group, expressed serious concern over Kanu’s ongoing detention despite several court rulings and the increasing worries about his health and access to proper medical treatment.

The organization stressed strongly that every Nigerian’s life and welfare—no matter their political or ideological beliefs must be safeguarded under the law.

“His right to life and health must be respected,” FENRAD said, adding that reports emerging from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody “indicate that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health has significantly worsened, raising fears of a possible medical emergency if immediate action is not taken.

“We cannot ignore the clear signs of medical neglect. The Nigerian state owes it a duty—both morally and constitutionally to ensure that Mazi Kanu is not allowed to die in custody. This is not just about politics; this is about human rights.”

The group urged the five South-East governors and the region’s federal lawmakers to set aside political differences and take meaningful steps toward Kanu’s release on humanitarian and health grounds.

FENRAD also reminded authorities of previous court orders granting bail to Kanu, which remain unimplemented.

Furthermore, the organization appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to show leadership by instructing the Attorney General and the relevant judicial bodies to reassess Kanu’s legal case with a view toward facilitating his release.

“President Tinubu has a golden opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to national healing, unity, and justice. Releasing Kanu under strict legal conditions would not only de-escalate tensions in the South East but also pave the way for inclusive dialogue and peace-building,” it said.

FENRAD called on elected representatives, especially from the South East, not to stay silent in the face of what it described as “systemic injustice.”

The group warned that lawmakers’ silence might be interpreted as complicity and reminded them that genuine representation involves defending the rights and well-being of their constituents, regardless of political sensitivity.
