The NNPC Foundation has launched a free cataract surgery programme in the North-West region to restore sight and improve the lives of thousands of individuals. The programme, inaugurated in Zaria by the foundation’s managing director, Mrs Emmanuella Arukwe, aims to benefit 6,000 patients across the country, with 1,300 beneficiaries from the North-West region.

Arukwe explained that the foundation had already benefitted other geopolitical zones, including the South-West, South-East, and South-South, and was now focusing on the North-West. “NNPC Foundation is an impact arm of the NNPC, and it is the arm of the NNPC that is responsible for health and education interventions, among others,” she said.

The foundation’s major areas of focus include medical interventions, educational interventions, and initiatives in the energy sector and environment. Arukwe noted that cataract is a leading cause of blindness and is preventable, adding, “We are excited to see that the surgeries are already taking place. We are excited that many people are regaining their sights for them to contribute meaningfully to the development of their families, state, and Nigeria at large.

In addition to cataract surgery, the foundation has also conducted cancer screening for nearly 3,000 patients and collaborated with the Cardiac Society to perform operations on patients with cardiac diseases.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Umma Ahmed, commended the foundation for the initiative, saying it aligns with Governor Uba Sani’s health vision, which prioritises access to equitable and quality healthcare services for all. “This initiative is not only restoring sights but also restoring hope, dignity, and productivity to individuals who might have otherwise lived with avoidable blindness due to cataract,” she said.

Ahmed restated the state government’s commitment to strengthening collaborations and partnerships with stakeholders like the NNPC Foundation to bring life-changing health services closer to the people
