North can’t wait till 2031 – Northern leaders kick against Tinubu second term

Prominent leaders and influencers in Northern Nigeria are urging President Bola Tinubu to abandon his aspirations for a second term in office.

President Tinubu’s current tenure is set to expire in 2027, coinciding with the nation’s general elections, as reported by ZINGTIE.

Key Northern figures, members of the Arewa Consultative Forum, expressed this stance while rejecting a proposal by Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress. Ganduje suggested that the North should wait until 2031 before contesting the presidency.

The northern leaders emphasized that the region cannot be forced into re-electing President Tinubu in 2027.

Ganduje recently argued that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should serve for eight years, citing fairness as the reason. He made this statement while receiving a delegation from the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Media Centre and the Tinubu Northern Youth Forum at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.

Ganduje’s argument was based on the fact that northern president Muhammadu Buhari had completed two terms. However, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and other northern political figures rejected his argument.

They criticized Ganduje for participating in what they described as a “cult-like” arrangement. The ACF and other northern leaders emphasized that the North cannot be coerced into re-electing President Tinubu in 2027.

According to Tukur Muhammad-Baba, National Publicity Secretary of the ACF, no party member can be forced to vote for anyone. He stated, “It is up to the voters to endorse, reject, or modify” their choices.

He said, “In 2015, we were sold a dummy of anti-corruption. We were sold a dummy of many things, and people have realized that it wasn’t true. Then, of course, the Renewed Hope came in 2023, and the hope is turning into a nightmare.”

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has expressed skepticism about President Tinubu’s prospects for re-election.

El-Rufai’s concerns were outlined in a recent post, “2027: South West, Tinubu’s supporters playing with fire – Part 1,” where he noted a significant decline in Tinubu’s relationship with the North.

According to El-Rufai, this deterioration has occurred mere months into Tinubu’s presidency, prompting warnings of a potential repeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2015 re-election loss.
