If its requirements are satisfied, the League of Northern Democrats (LND) stated that it would join the new alliance against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In order to join the alliance seeking to run against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the general election of 2027, LND, led by Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State, demanded the formation of a new political party.

Following a strategic analysis of the coalition’s options, Dr. Umar Ardo, the LND convener, and 12 other senior members of the group released a statement on Sunday that included this information.

According to reports, the alliance, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Nasir El-Rufa’i (Kaduna), among others, is seeking to adopt either the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as its platform for the 2027 polls.

A new political party’s registration as a platform to run against Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 is also being considered.

But after giving it some thought, Ardo stated that the LND has decided that creating a new political party is the most practical and long-term solution.

“After examining the proposals of fusing into existing parties like the ADC or SDP versus forming a new party, we have concluded that establishing a fresh political platform offers the most principled and forward-looking path,” the statement read.

He added that current political parties present structural risks that could thwart the coalition’s goals, but that there is still time to register and build momentum under the banner of a new political party, with roughly two years until the general elections.

“The ADC, SDP, and similar platforms already have entrenched leadership structures at ward, local government, state, and zonal levels, many of which are legally binding and resistant to change,” he explained.

Ardo opined that: “Merging with such parties without first achieving total harmonisation of interests and control would invite internal conflicts, legal battles, and possible dysfunction.”

He went on to say that developing a new platform would give the coalition a fresh start in their fight against the APC.
