Bianca Ojukwu, the wife of Biafran leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Nigeria’s former ambassador, has denounced the life sentence imposed on IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and urged Nigerians, particularly the Igbos, to maintain composure while political solutions are investigated.

After returning from a monitoring duty in Zanzibar, Ojukwu stated that the verdict was not what anyone had hoped for.

She cautioned against any response that would escalate tensions both domestically and internationally in her message released on Friday.

“There comes a time in the history of a people when there is need for calm… I advise Ndigbo and Nigerians as a whole that such a period is now,” she said.

“A word is enough for the wise,” she said, urging people to exercise moderation and refrain from doing anything that would intensify the already tense situation.

She believes that strategic engagement—rather than rage—must be the foundation of the future. In order to communicate with the federal government, Ojukwu urged Igbo leaders, including governors, senators, lawmakers, traditional leaders, clergy, and the business community, to unify.

She warned that “beating the drums of fury and sabre-rattling will only generate diminishing returns and, in the worst case, yet another wasteland.”

The fight for justice, equity, and fair cohabitation for Ndigbo in Nigeria must continue, peacefully, according to Ojukwu, who described discussion as the most effective path to de-escalation.

Ojukwu maintained that a solution that will “reduce national anxiety and societal trauma” is still possible, notwithstanding the shockwaves created by Kanu’s sentencing.

“I reassure Ndigbo, Nigerians and our foreign partners that prospects remain for resolving this impasse. Now is the time for a joint engagement involving all South-East states to seek a political solution,” she added.
