NUC approves 21 new academic courses in ATBU

At Bauchi’s Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), 21 new academic courses have been granted for accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

In a same vein, every course taught at the Seven Polytechnics and Colleges of Education connected to ATBU has been approved.

All nine of the courses offered by the university’s Sustainable Procurement, Environmental, and Social Standard Enhancement Projects – Centre of Excellence (SPESSE-CE), which is financed by the World Bank, have also received full accreditation from the NUC.

The committee also approved the founding of the ATBU Faculty of Computing, Faculty of Dentistry, and Faculty of Allied Health Sciences as three new faculties.

The announcement was made by Zailani Bappa, the director of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, in a statement that was provided to journalists in Bauchi on Wednesday.

Professor Sani Usman Kunya, Acting Vice-Chancellor of ATBU, said in the release that the approvals coincided with the university’s ongoing efforts to achieve excellence in all academic endeavours.

According to Professor Kunya, the institution applied to the NUC for accreditation of 25 courses, of which 21 received full accreditation.

“Three courses received interim accreditation, and one course, Urban and Regional Planning, was denied accreditation.

“We are fully committed to addressing the challenges faced by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning,” said Professor Kunya.

The university’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has successfully started its academic session, the Acting Vice-Chancellor added, and the university has made all the required preparations for the effective opening of the new faculties and departments.
