In a bid to foster entrepreneurship and private sector growth within the veterinary profession, the Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) has taken a significant step by presenting a total of N9 million to nine young veterinarians. This initiative, designed to empower recent graduates, aims to equip them with the necessary resources to establish and grow their own businesses, thereby contributing to the development of the veterinary sector.

According to Dr. Moses Arokoyo, NVMA President, “Our goal is to encourage them to become entrepreneurs. We have discovered that any profession is only as strong as its private sector.” Arokoyo disclosed that the association has disbursed a total of N42 million over the past three years to support young veterinarians.

The beneficiaries are expected to establish businesses within the veterinary sector, such as poultry farms or pharmaceutical outlets that supply medicines for zoonotic diseases, and create job opportunities for others. Arokoyo highlighted the importance of empowering veterinarians to tackle health challenges, particularly zoonotic diseases, which are estimated to cost sub-Saharan Africa $9 billion.

The NVMA President stated that the selection of the beneficiaries followed a transparent process, including the publication of terms of reference on various veterinarians’ platforms and the formation of a selection committee to assess applications. He also mentioned that the association has outlined key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor the beneficiaries’ progress, alongside mentorship programs.

Chairman of the NVMA Board of Trustees, Prof. Abdulganiyu Jinadu, commended the initiative, saying, “With limited government capacity to provide jobs, such programs can inspire young graduates to become employers themselves.” Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Dr. Musa Inuah, also emphasized the importance of private sector-driven employment opportunities, stating that the government cannot absorb all veterinary graduates into the public sector.
