Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has highlighted the role of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a vital instrument for fostering national cohesion, empowering young people, and promoting cross-cultural integration.

He underscored that the NYSC has made significant contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic progress since its establishment.

Represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, Governor Adeleke made these remarks during the official opening and swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch Stream II orientation course, held at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Ede, Osun State.

He pointed out that, since its launch in 1973, the program has functioned as a consistent force for unity, helping to bridge ethnic and religious divides while equipping Nigerian youth with practical experience and skills that go beyond formal education.

The governor also acknowledged that the presence of corps members at the camp reflects their commitment and readiness to serve the nation with pride and integrity.

He said, “The Scheme remains one of our country’s most enduring institutions for nation-building and civic responsibility.”

While encouraging the corps members to be respectful to their host communities, he disclosed that the state is “a land of peace, tradition, and immense potential. Our people are welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. I urge you to be respectful to your hosts, uphold the laws of the land, and contribute positively to the communities where you will serve. In turn, I want to reassure you that the Government of Osun State remains firmly committed to your security, welfare, and general well-being throughout your stay.”

He also admonished the corps members to be good ambassadors of their families and institutions and to serve as change agents in every assignment undertaken.

He said, “Remember always that you are not just representing yourselves; you carry the honour of your families, your states of origin, and your institutions. Uphold the values of discipline, loyalty, and service. Strive to be role models and positive change agents in every assignment you undertake.”

While giving his address, the NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Agbor Ndoma Obim, revealed that a total number of 2,883 corps members were deployed to Osun State and dislodged from Lagos State.

“1,332 corps members, out of which 574 are males and 758 females, were deployed to the state for the one-year mandatory service.

“A total of 1,551 were dislodged from Lagos State for the three-week orientation course,” he declared.

The Osun NYSC boss congratulated the corps members and hinted that the orientation course is a unique journey of self-discovery, skill acquisition, service, and nation-building.

While warning that the camp is not a vacation resort, Agbor stressed that, “Punctuality, discipline, participation in all camp activities, adherence to prescribed dress code, and respect for camp rules and officials are non-negotiable. We are committed to a zero-tolerance policy on indiscipline, and we expect full cooperation from every Corps Member.”

He, however, cautioned against the wrong use of social media and posting of sensitive camp activities.

“I strongly caution you to use social media responsibly. Avoid posting sensitive camp activities or internal protocols online under the guise of content creation. The camp is a regimented environment, and discipline remains a core principle of the NYSC Scheme. Sharing unauthorised content could breach security and undermine the integrity of the orientation programme. Instead, let your social media presence reflect creativity, decency, and values that promote peace, unity, and progress. Be ambassadors of the Scheme both online and offline,” he added.
