Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has pledged to honour the memory of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a 55-year-old veterinary technologist who tragically died on February 19, 2024, while trying to save a colleague from a lion attack at the university’s zoological garden.

The university’s registrar, Mr. Adetunji Bakare, made the announcement during a one-day workshop organised by the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) to mark the first anniversary of Olawuyi’s death. “The university will ensure that Olawuyi’s legacy is immortalised,” Bakare said.

Bakare emphasised that the event was not a mourning ceremony but a celebration of Olawuyi’s bravery and selflessness. “We are here to honour his life and heroism,” he said.

The NAAT National President, represented by Dr. Rachel Hassan-Olajokun, described Olawuyi as a martyr and called for the university to rename the zoological garden in his honour. “Olawuyi’s sacrifice will never be forgotten,” she said.

Mr. Reuben Temerigha, Managing Director of Western Diamond Energy Limited (WEDEL), emphasised the need for improved workplace safety measures. “We must prioritise safety in our workplaces to prevent such tragic incidents,” he said.

The Chairman of NAAT-OAU, Mr. Matthew Oluwaniyi, stressed that Olawuyi’s sacrifice should serve as a wake-up call to prioritise workplace safety. “We must ensure that our workplaces are safe and secure for all staff,” he said.
