The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has implemented a new dress code policy for students, prohibiting certain attire and behaviours on campus. According to a memo dated June 13, 2025, and signed by Registrar K. A. Bakare, students are expected to adhere to the new guidelines to maintain a conducive learning environment.
The policy outlines specific dress code infractions that will attract disciplinary action, including rustication. Some of the prohibited attire and behaviours include “sexually provocative dresses, backless clothes, transparent wear, off-shoulder clothes, bomb shorts, tattered jeans, dreadlocks, and sagging.” Additionally, “heavy make-ups, rumpled and dirty clothes, and hair plaiting or weaving by male students” are also forbidden.
Students found guilty of violating the dress code policy will face rustication, with the duration varying depending on the offence. For instance, “any student found guilty of violation of coloured hairstyles, hair braiding for males, or spangled hairstyles for males” risks rustication for two semesters. Other offences, such as “unwelcome touching, kissing and hugging of the opposite sex and massaging or sitting on the lap of the opposite sex”, will also attract two semesters of rustication.
